Statement on Intent

Statement of Intent/500 words+/Images
Graphic Narrative.
Name : James Pether

What Song lyrics have you selected? Why?
I have picked the song Down Payment Blues by ACDC because this song meant a lot to me because it reminded me of my granddad. The lyrics in the song are all about the way you want to live you life. This will mean I can make a good graphic narrative. The lyrics I have picked are:
Sittin' in a Cadillac
Listenin' to the radio
Suzy baby get on in
Tells me where she wanna go
I'm livin' in a nightmare
These lyrics show a lot of imagery in my opinion which will help me develop my graphic narrative.

What format will your Graphic Narrative take? (Comic, children book, illustration etc…)
Well I think that the best way to produce my graphic narrative will be illustration. This is where I believe my graphic will be best. The graphics can be adapted so that I can use my strengths but develop my weaknesses at the same time.

How will you change your script to make it more modern, historical or futuristic twist to your script, illustrating a mood/style or intended target audience?

I will use the current software to make my illustration look up to date but take a historical approach. My drawings will be of historical things; this then means for example “Sittin’ in a Cadillac” will be of an old 1970’s Chevrolet. This will then give the impact that I’m looking for. Im looking to give my audience an image to remember when they listen to this song. I believe that music is a powerful things, so making people your artwork will be amazing. My target audience will be middle aged people who remember this song when it was first released.

What designers or illustrators do you feel will influence and inspire the style you are working toward and why?
I’m going for the BMD design approach because I really enjoy looking at their artwork. With this in mind, I will take this approach but use my words at the top of the picture to make them stand out. I want this artwork to be bold and let people remember what I’m going for. BMD let the words float inside their text but I’m not going to go for this approach. I really enjoy their artwork so that the reason why I’m going to go for a style like them.

Which techniques and materials do you hope to use? List and include source i.e. collage, photographic, typography, drawings, diagrams etc…

Im going to use illustrator to develop my artwork because it shows enables me to make my work modern. I will first draw all my artwork, which will then help me when I scan it in, illustrator. This then will help me so that I have all the outlines for my picture. Then I will decide what to do whether I need to change the feel of the drawing or change the drawing because it doesn’t look right. This then will help me decide what to do next.

Guess Who

I have used the Pen tool to create vectors in order to get my shape of the face, so i could fill in the colours. Layers to lock the background image so that you can use it as a guide. This is very helpful because it can allow you to do other things other than trying to not overwrite over layers. I have used the ellipse tool to try and shape my head and sent things to the back so i can have the eyes on top. Then image traced my face originally to get a initial shape.

Final Graphic Narrative

I designed my graphic narrative based on BMD Design who are a design company who uses the form of art to show and express what they like in the modern society. In my artwork I have designed it so these lyrics can be seen using Bold text. This has been contrasted by a limited colour palette because i felt that black and white would give it a better feel, like a sin city approach. I believe that the colours work well for me because they are opposites on the colour palette and can make it stand out from the crowd.

The type face I have gone with is a Bold font, as I believe this gives the audience a bigger 'wow' factor because of how big it is. I have decided that it was best to still go with with the white and black theme because I was approaching it like a sin city piece of art work. The scale of the text didn't really matter in my opinion as the bold font would stand out no matter what the size it was. I believe it reflects the theme well and still ties in with the BMD artwork because it gives the vital message it needs.
The use of imagery in the five pieces, I believe reflects the narrative and the assignment brief because it uses my own artwork to tell the story. I think the imagery is realistic which uses elements of both hand-drawing and computer work. I have scanned in my work and altered some of the bits to make it look a little bit better. In my opinion maybe I should have tried to make some of the drawings a bit neater, but other than this I'm very pleased on my final outcome.

The first thing you read is the text in all of the pieces because of how bold the text is. Then you glance of the artwork to emphasis the message. This in the other hand shows that they will understand what the artwork is trying to show. The message between all of the art is to show the lyrics. I believe that the hierarchy is in the correct order and I would leave it in the order it is on the blog.

The tools and techniques I have used are a variety in which i have not used before in other pieces of art work. I have scanned all my work in because I drew the artwork originally. The variety of techniques, using things like the pen tool to image tracing etc. I have decided this was the best way to show this is because I thought I would show off my narrative in the best way. This has been the best way of learning because i have never drawn my own artwork before this and I think this was a huge learning curve.

Overall, I think that it was a huge learning curve because I have tried something different which has payed off. Rather then doing just type, I have decided to try something different which I'm proud of. If i was to change anything it would be just to make the lines in some the drawings look better.

Jack and Jill

 Jack Jill-
I have used the @ to represent jill's head because it reminded me of the emoji on the phone of a hot headed women and thats what i thought jill reminded me of. The body was their to represent a very small women. The hashtag is their to represent a man with attitude who tweets about his wife. And the moon was to represents the full moon being love between each other of jack and jill .

The next picture is have used the star to represent the way of life. It reminded me of the star to follow like in the bible stories, so i decided to input this into my story. The hill is represented with some weird picture bits that i put together in order to show its difficult to make it to the stop.

Killer Coke

I have used Adobe Illustrator make this artwork about Coca Cola. This poster gives off the effect that, the way coca cola are running their business in the 3rd world countries is disgusting. So in order to get this message across i have decided to design a poster that shows death. Using the grim reaper in the top right corner shows that what coke are doing is slaughtering innocent people by demanding such high quality. They use kids to farm their recourses even though it's agaisnt the law. I have also used, a quote to give the reading audience an understanding of what is actually going on. When i read the quote "The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living" in my eyes it shows you can hurt but never forget. No matter how many times you just kill people off, you will never ever forget what you have done.

Graphic Narative- Evaluation

After a long period of working towards a deadline, it feels like a big i have achieved a massive goal in completing a decent collection of artwork. The overall narrative assignment was very enjoyable although at times became very stressful because of the attention to detail. If i could re do this task again I would because it made my illustration skills much better. The way i created my narrative was by hand drawing the pictures first then scanning them in to create a digital version. This became a really hard task because

After looking back at my work, I had wish i could had maybe altered the style in order to make my story more effective. Maybe trying to make my style as close to BMD DESIGN. Although I'm very satisfied of what i have achieved. My final outcome was designed in Adobe Illustrator, which is used in both professional and production industry. I used a variety of techniques in Illustrator like the pen tool, using live paints and many other techniques to make my final outcome.

Using a wide range of colours, styles, fonts and illustrations, each helmet is as creative as they come. Each design makes the most of the helmet's shape, with letters perfectly placed around the entire product. The colour palette chosen for each design seamlessly ties in with the colour of the helmet itself.

BMD Design have created a piece of artwork for Lucky Brand (Clothing Outline), in order to for it to be printed onto teeshirts. The use of colour is simple, but bold in order for it to be effective. The limited colour palette suggests that BMD wanted to be creative using the text to its full potential. The chosen wood background, i believe enhances the picture but also suits the bear it self. The text is a mixture of both big and small, with the bigger text having more of a place, which gets the main message across. Reflecting the theme of it being printed on a clothing line , it does its job effectively and will be great to see. The fonts, work really well , and i lil the the curliness of the font giving it that little bit extra. I think the artwork would have been art drawn first then scanned into the computer to make the finishing touches. This is a great way of knowing exactly what you want and where you want it. It has used pastel colours in order for it to get different tones. The first this i read when i looked at this picture was the California. I believe this was because it was at the top and had a cool swerve to it. Then you begin to look at the bears head and start looking across. You eventually understand what Lucky Brand is and when they were Established. BMD created this by hand with pens and pencils, which then was developed in illustrator into vectors to change the opacity and things like that.
