BMD DESIGN

In all its work, BMD Design seeks to seduce and surprise, but also to demonstrate and convince.Located in Bordeaux, France, BMD specializes in typography, visual identity, signage, publishing, advertisements, and apparel design.Bordeaux based BMD have been designing and art-directing for over a decade.Being in business since 2001, BMD definitely understands quality and demonstrates value
From his training as a graphic designer in the early 1990s in high school, agency founder Jolimont Toulouse Bruno kept a love for craftsmanship, the one before the computer. He keeps craftmanship at the forefront of his designs, with a strong influence of hand-made inspirations.
Using a wide range of colours, styles, fonts and illustrations, each helmet is as creative as they come. Each design makes the most of the helmet's shape, with letters perfectly placed around the entire product. The colour palette chosen for each design seamlessly ties in with the colour of the helmet itself.

BMD Design have created a piece of artwork for Lucky Brand (Clothing Outline), in order to for it to be printed onto teeshirts. The use of colour is simple, but bold in order for it to be effective. The limited colour palette suggests that BMD wanted to be creative using the text to its full potential. The chosen wood background, i believe enhances the picture but also suits the bear it self. The text is a mixture of both big and small, with the bigger text having more of a place, which gets the main message across. Reflecting the theme of it being printed on a clothing line , it does its job effectively and will be great to see. The fonts, work really well , and i lil the the curliness of the font giving it that little bit extra. I think the artwork would have been art drawn first then scanned into the computer to make the finishing touches. This is a great way of knowing exactly what you want and where you want it. It has used pastel colours in order for it to get different tones. The first this i read when i looked at this picture was the California. I believe this was because it was at the top and had a cool swerve to it. Then you begin to look at the bears head and start looking across. You eventually understand what Lucky Brand is and when they were Established. BMD created this by hand with pens and pencils, which then was developed in illustrator into vectors to change the opacity and things like that.

A cover for the New York Times Magazine, 2006
This piece of work which was created for the New York Times Magazine in 2006 is a stand out piece of art for me. It uses bold writing to makes the words that means most be recognised first. The words which are designed in the shape of  typical 'bomb' makes it unique because of the way it has been designed. The boldness of 'Islam' gives the art the structure of the rest of the piece. It enables the audience to create an image in the head of what these people from the middle east are doing. This is helped by using a limited colour palette i.e Black and White. This helps the art give a strict and harsh message out. It shows that the artist is angry about this ethical problem and wants this message to be harsh. With the theme being 'against terrorists' it enables the artist to use his art to be a harsh message to the audience. The scale of the text get smaller as you look down the page. It uses the theme of a bomb to reflect its message against terrorists. In my opinion this piece would have been originally hand drawn which then had led to digital enhancement. It would have had the outline of the "Bomb", then he would have drew in the words by hand to get an original draft. Then he would have scanned it in to Adobe Illustrator to beef the art up. This reflect the theme incredibly well to show that this is a hard hitting image. When you first look at this image , i was first drawn to the word 'Bomb'. Although it may not be the biggest word in the image it gives the structure of the artwork. After you look above to 'Islam' which then, you as a audience know this is a hate message to terrorists. You then read down the page to understand the the phrase. This text is the best way to represent this information because its like reading a normal paragraph. It enables the audience to gauge into the artwork and the hard hitting message.

Tools and Techniques of the Image

  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Illustrator
The most successful thing about this artwork is that he has been able to use the message and adapt it into a visual image. Using the bomb to give the impression that the terrorists could drop a bomb on top of anyone at anytime. It is a hard ethical image giving the audience something to think about and discuss. The depth and quality of this image is amazing and I don't think I would change it because it gives the message perfectly.

Logo Development

This is my development and initial ideas for my logo for my newspaper. As you can see i started of with simple colours to start creating my idea.

After this I decided on some stylish writing to give it a classy look.

Then I started to think what stealth actually meant , so changing the opacity of the text was able to give me a shady grey and black colour.

After this, I put to stealth's together one above and one underneath to try and develop the idea. Adding a triangle and stars to try and emphasis what stealth meant.

With this in mind, i took it a completely different way and changed the colours of the outline to red and add another triangle to gain a different perceptive.

After that , I thought it was missing something , so i added and created the arcs to give some inspiration for the readers of the newspaper.

Then finally I added two different background colours to see what it would look like.

Kate Moross

Kate Moross
When looking at her artwork you always get a variety in what you’re looking at, from the examples you can see how she get her main points. It can always give such and effect with street art. When you think street art, you think kids and spray paint, although you can see she has changed the way society may think about this. Using bold, bright colours with black outlines always gets the best out of the image to give it the full emphasis. After having high profile jobs and experience behind her, all that happens is that her artwork only gets better. Although, having a big high profile job on the Olympics where can she go wrong? On a personal point, I really like the punchy feel of her work, which is able to stick in your mind. Also I like the street feel and makes it related to us as an audience group.

Avatar

To make the avatar we had to use a variety of tools in order achieve the final outcome. Overall we use different blending tools, paint brushes and gradient tools to achieve this. Using the liquify tool to change the eyes was able to give it the real avatar feel.
